Cuban Triple Jumper Mabel Gay Wins Gold in Brazil



Brasilia, May 7.- Cuban female triple jumper Mabel Gay won the gold medal in the Grand Prix in the Brazilian state of Para, a competition in which her teammate Yarelis Barrios (discus) ended in fourth place. Mabel Gay could jump 14.40 meters, which was enough to beat Jamaican Trecia Smith (14.05) and also Cuban Dailenis Alcantara (13.99), second and third places respectively.

In the male competition for the 200 flat meters, the winner was Jamaican Michael Mathieu (20.16 seconds), a man who left a new record for this event, with also his best personal record ever.

After Mathieu, the 2nd and 3rd places were for Brazilians Aldemir Gomes da Silva (20.48) and Diego Henrique Cavalcante (20.50). Cavalcante reached his best personal record with this result.

A discrete result of 10,18 seconds gave Trinitarian Emmanuel Callender the victory in the 100 flat meters, beating Brazilians Bruno de Barros (10.27) and Nilson Andre (10.37). Andre got his best personal record with this result.

In the female competition Rosangela Santos (Brazil) was the winner in the 100 flat meters with 11.24, beating US Alex Anderson (11.39) and also Brazilian Evelyn dos Santos (11.43).

US Latosha Wallace won the female 400 flat meters with her best personal (55.18). Cuban Yadisleidis Pedroso (55.20) reached the silver medal, and Portuguese Vera Barbosa got the bronze with 55.98.

The female competition for the 200 flat meters ended with the victory of US Tiffany Townsend with 23.30 seconds, beating Brazilians Geisa Coutinho (23.23) and Vanda Gomes (23.55). (Prensa Latina).
