Nearly One Million Cubans Suffer from Asthma

Havana, Cuba, May 8.- Nearly one million Cubans suffer from asthma, although less than one third are affected by the most severe form of the disease, an expert from the Ministry of Public Health stated on Tuesday.

Doctor Juan Carlos Rodriguez Vazquez, president of the National Commission of Asthma from the Ministry of Public Health, talked about the importance for those patients to control the disease.

This is accomplished through suitable comprehensive treatment, including education, non-pharmacologic management and medicines, Rodriguez told Granma newspaper.

The physician recommended to follow medical instructions, regular monitoring, and preventive treatment.

Rodriguez also advised to keep an adequate weight and a healthy diet.

Although asthma develops most commonly in children, the disease could appear at any age, he said.

Frequent wheezing and coughing at night are expressions of chronic airway inflammation to make difficult the normal flow of air through the respiratory tracts, Rodriguez stated. (Prensa Latina).
