CIA Agent Brother in Prison for Defrauding Health Program
Washington, Jun 14.- A U.S. judge sentenced to five years in prison the brother of Carlos Alberto Montaner, a CIA agent and a fugitive from Cuban justice for terrorism, for embezzling the federal health program known as Medicare.
Ernesto A. Montaner, 71 years old, will also pay a fine of $ 2.8 million for bribing care centers for the elderly and disabled, home services agencies and recruiters of patients in exchange for referrals to his rehabilitation clinics in Miami-Dade.
Montaner fled U.S. justice in 2008 to Costa Rica, but the authorities of the Central American country arrested him two years later and imprisoned him until his extradition to Miami in February 2011.
His son and partner are facing a sentence of four and three years in prison, respectively, for conspiring to cheat the state program.
According to John V. Gillies, special agent of the Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Miami is recognized as the capital of Medicare fraud in America. (Prensa Latina)
