Frei Betto Denounces Conspiracy in Rio to Impose Green Economy
Havana, Cuba, Jun 20.- “There is a real Northern conspiracy in Rio plus 20 to set aside the principles of sustainable development and impose the new green economy thesis,” denounced the renowned Brazilian theologian Frei Betto.
The recent proposal by the industrialized countries is a fallacy used to cover up the privatization of natural resources like water, and the commoditization and mercantilization of nature, wrote on Tuesday Betto in the website Evared.
Referring to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, which begins its sessions today (at the highest level) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Betto pointed out that it should be focused on the urgent need for international instruments to assure universal rights to all seven billion people living on the planet.
It is the job of the governments that are gathering in this meeting to prioritize sustainability rights, welfare and progress of society, stressed the liberation theologian, author of 50 books, including the world famous "Fidel and Religion."
Betto said he was participating in the People's Summit, an event parallel to the Conference, to propose more control of advertising and reject incitement to excessive consumerism and the creation of false needs, especially when directed at children and youth.
The current capitalist paradigm of increasing accumulation of wealth and produce according to market and not to social needs, it will never eradicate poverty, inequality and environmental destruction, he said.
Cuba shares with the social movements gathered in the alternative event, the political agreement to resist the "green economy" and the condemnation of capitalism, told CAN news agency Llanisca Lugo, a Cuban representative in the Politburo Rio plus 20.
After two decades of the establishment, for the first time, of a global agenda for sustainable development in the historic "Earth Summit", this is a new attempt to find solutions to the serious problems that threaten human survival.(ACN)
