Ecuador Denounces US Financial Support to Anti-ALBA Groups
Quito, Jun 20.- "Politically worrisome," is how the head of Ecuador´s El Telegrafo daily, Orlando Perez, described the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) confirmation that it is funding organizations opposing progressive governments in the region.
In a statement to the "El Poder de la Palabra" section of the ecuadorinmediato.com website, Perez said that USAID has admitted its multi-million dollar funding of opposition groups in the member countries of The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA).
Perez emphasized that organizations like Faro, Fundamedios, Esquel, as well as civil society groups, receive millions of USAID dollars to interfere, through workshops and projects, including the "Proyecto Ciudadanía Activa" (Active Citizens Project).
The Telegrafo editor said that certain groups plan to carry out USAID funded workshops to train journalists, and questioned what Ecuadorian opposition groups would do with $4 million USD in their pockets for political campaigning.
The journalist said that what these organizations are now doing with that legal but politically complex funding, is to support or sustain another country´s "democratic values" in Ecuador, which is in his opinion a matter of concern. (Prensa Latina).
