Camagüey and Guantanamo Lead Cuba’s National Boxing Team Tournament



Camagüey, Jun 21 – Camagüey and Guantanamo provinces are sharing the first position on the board of the National Boxing Team Tournament which is held at the Rafael Fortún Chacón Sport Palace in the city of Camagüey.

Villa Clara and Pinar del Rio (40 units) and Santiago de Cuba and Havana (32) are positioned in the second and third places, respectively.

The first day of competitions proved that the quality of the teams participating in this tournament is very even and the fight to capture medals will be hard.  

A proof of this were the results of the first bouts, two of them ended up 6-4 and 5-5.

Camagüey team which was champion of last year’s tournament are strongly committed to keep the title, so they defeated yesterday former runner up Havana 48-32.    

Featherweight Liván Alcolea beat Pablo Viente 18-14, and gave the first win to the locals. Light heavyweight Yusiel Naples, also of Camaguey, crushed Yunier Pérez 20-8.

On the other hand, Guantanamo that was not present at the finals of 2011 tournament outplayed Santiago de Cuba 48-32.

Heavyweight Frank Sánchez, of Guantanamo, beat Jorge Luis Garbey, of Santiago de Cuba, 14-4, while junior bantamweight Yasmani Fresneda (Santiago) was better than  a Yordan Soyet (Gtmo) 36-24. (AIN/Radio Cadena Agramonte).
