MERCOSUR Social Summit will Condemn Coup in Paraguay



Argentina, Jun 28.- The 15th Social Summit of the South Common Market (MERCOSUR) opened sessions in the Argentinean city of Mendoza. The meeting is expected to issue a strong condemnation of the coup that ousted Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo.

Over 900 delegates from different Latin American entities are attending the Summit under the slogan “the importance of safeguarding democracy in the region.”

The meeting of social organizations from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile and Venezuela, is expected to come up with a strong joint declaration against the Coup in Paraguay said Argentina’s minister of Social Development and Human Rights, Guillermo Elizalde, cited by Telesur TV channel.

The objective of the Social Summit, attended by student, cultural and union organizations is promoting the joint work with  government in the region to enhance the people’s participation in the search for solutions to regional problems. (RHC).
