Havana, Cuba, Jun 29.- The Havana-based Biological and Pharmaceutical Products Enterprise (LABIOFAM) has begun producing over 1,000 tons of biofertilizers and other biological agents to contribute to the Cuban agriculture sector’s strategy aimed at replacing imports and decreasing the use of chemicals.

In a recent press conference LABIOFAM senior specialist Yordanis Peña Alvarez said that her company’s contribution will help decrease imports of biological products between 10 and 15 percent, Granma daily newspaper reported.

Meanwhile, the director of the Cuban Vegetable Health Institute Emilio Fernandez  stressed the effectiveness of biopesticides, which are also included in the production program, while biofertilizers help increase agricultural yield by some 40 percent and they also improve the quality of soils.

The work of LABIOFAM Enterprise is marked by intense and significant research and production of biological and pharmaceutical products over the past 20 years. At present, the institution meets 98 percent of the country’s demand of veterinary products. (ACN).
