University of Camagüey’s Greatest Graduation Ever

Camagüey, July 13.- A total of 2,202 students of 24 courses, which is the largest figure in the last 45 years, graduated from the University of Camaguey, the first university set up by the Revolutionary government.

In the Ignacio Agramonte Revolution square, these young people received their higher studies degrees accrediting them as engineers, bachelors or architects.

During the graduation ceremony, Ph.D. Santiago Lajes Choy, rector of the the Higher education institution (HEI), urged the new professionals to take with dignity, modesty and simplicity the responsibilities that starting from now they will assume, mostly those related to the implementation of the guidelines approved in the 6th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba.

In addition, Lajes Choy expressed his satisfaction for the work well done by the teaching staff and the good results of the new professional graduates and stated that the doors of this institution remain open for postgraduate courses.

The rector also thanked the Revolutionary leaders Fidel and Raul for having been architects and key promoters of the Cuban educational system which is totally free regardless the level of teaching.

The disciplines with the largest figure of graduates are Accounting and Finance (688), Psychology (273), Law (244), Social Communication (145) and Agro-Industrial Engineering (114).

In the technical strand, courses such as Agronomy, Industrial Engineering and Veterinary the number of graduates is lower, but this should change because the country needs to prepare labour force in this field.

The majority of those who graduated this year come from Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila and Las Tunas provinces, but there are also 22 foreign students from 17 countries who spent five years studying at the University of Camagüey.

Roberto Cartaya Escalona (Civil Engineering) was chosen the best student of this promotion, while the most outstanding faculty was that of Languages and Communication with four students excelling in the classrooms, all of them in Journalism.

First Secretary of the Communist Party in Camaguey Julio César García Rodríguez, and his counterpart at municipal level Damara Sánchez López, plus President of the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power (Government) Luis Ynchausti and other officials like Deputy Minister of Higher Education Oberto Santín attended the ceremony.

The first graduation of the University of Camaguey occurred on December 1972, where 21 young people received their degrees as engineers. With today’s promotion, a total of 26,431 students have completed their tertiary studies in this university, including 1,100 foreigners, most of them from the Third World.   (Arailaisy Rosabal García/Radio Cadena Agramante).
