No More Arms Race in the Region, Says Ecuador

Quito, Aug 10.- Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño highlighted the pro-integration role of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the revolutionary transformations in the countryâ?Ös diplomacy.

In a yearly address to the country, Patino said there has been progress in the creation of a Defense Council of UNASUR in order to generate a regional security policy and create an atmosphere of confidence among nations.

"No more arms race in the region to attack each other," he said in a solemn session of the National Assembly in this capital, broadcast live to the nation.

Patino said that this year the architecture of UNASUR was also consolidated through the creation of the Electoral Council and a Security Council, and progress has also been made in the working group on human rights, which will allow the region to have its own observers as needed in electoral processes without tutelage by foreign bodies.
