U.S. Envoy Susan Rice to Discuss Syria Situation with India

New Delhi, Aug 22.- U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, will discuss the situation in Syria with top Indian officials as part of a diplomatic offensive aimed at toppling President Bashar al-Assad's government.

In a private visit in this capital, Rice will meet separately with Indian Foreign Minister S. M. Krishna and Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai, as well as with National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon.

Indian government sources, who preferred to remain anonymous, told reporters that the Syrian crisis, Iran, and other multilateral issues, like the UN Security Council reforms, are expected to figure in the discussions.

Discussions on Syria, informed sources pointed out, are bound to create some dissonance between the US visitor and hosts because New Delhi is against forced regime change or a foreign intervention in Syria, and on the contrary, wants the Syrians to solve their own internal conflict.

With regard to Iran, the sources said that India will reiterate its decision of not joining the U.S. and European policy of sanctions against Iran. (Prensa Latina)
