Maize Harvest on the Rise in Camagüey
Camagüey, Aug 22. - The rainfall in recent days has favoured the maize crops in Camaguey province, where over 800 tonnes have been picked up, a figure which is far more than expected, and it will benefit the making of fodder for farmyard animals.
Locals who received idle lands in the form of free lease have joined these efforts for which they have relied on high quality seeds and plenty of water.
This year, maize growers in Camagüey expect to deliver some 840 tonnes of dry maize to the industry, an amount that will be used to manufacture feed for pigs and poultry, expensive for Cuba in the international market. Guillermo Rodríguez, of the Empresa de Cultivos Varios in Camagüey, claimed that this has been possible, among other things, because of relying on the technological package which allows them to increase yields up to 6 tonnes/ha.
The municipalities of Vertientes and Minas have taken the lead in the production of maize in Camagüey province and, the number of areas as well as of farmers that are raising maize grows each year. (Raysa Mestril Gutiérrez / Radio Cadena Agramonte).
