For a very long, long time Néstor Rodríguez has been a man of the radio, but his versatility also allowed him to make forays into theater.
"I began to act as amateur in 1961. I used to worked then for a oil company, the Sinclair that after the triumph of the Revolution changed into the Cuban Institute of Petroleum. There I was in charge of the provincial emulation, so I had to prepare this play to win the emulation that confronted the workers of the petrochemical and the metallurgical industries.
"And when I have prepared this duet, with the work "El Corte" by Rolando Ferrera, and had sent the invitations and everything was ready to make the performance in the Teatro Principal, my pair backs out, there I was facing a committed situation. That play decided the emulation!. We couldn't fail."
"I knew an actress in Camagüey named Hilda Gallardo and I went to see her, and she suggested she could do the ply with me; in two days and three nights we prepared it. We acted in the Teatro Principal and won."
"Thanks to this experience we determined to create the Amateur Group with some comrades of the Petrochemical Industry. We did "Homeland or Death", in which I portrayed a 70 year-old man, being a youth. By that time several actors leave for Havana and so there are vacant positions in the Theater "Tassende " and they call me because they had heard of my performance in the Principal, so I began as a professional actor in 1963."
When do you begin in the radio?
"I had done some things in the Radio with Manuel Villabella when Cadena Agramonte was located on Avellaneda street."
"Afterwards I leave for Santiago de Cuba with my wife - who was also an actress - and my youngest daughter, and there I worked in the Hall Van Troi with Alberto González Quiroga in CMKC, from 1968 to 1970."
"In 1971 I came back to Camagüey and directly begin to work in Cadena Agramonte. Later I did theater with the Brigada Arquímides Pous that was arranged to make comic opera, among them The Funeral of Papá Montero, Hot, hot burning hot, and the last play was The Count of the Sweet Sweet Potato, in homage to Enrique Arredondo who was still alive in that time. But at the same time I was linked to the radio."
Have you thought of retirement from the studios?
"I feel ok. There are people that tells me, boy with your age why don't you retire. I cannot retire, definitively this is what I love. Work doesn't inhibit me, it is very pleasant, besides, when you have been doing one thing for so many years you can not scorn experience so easily."
"There is something which really eats my mind, I hear people turning 60 year-old, (age of retirement) and leave after having had a specialized work, in moments when are full of wisdom, and they simply give up work because they arrived to that moment; this is not my case. I believe that all that I can contribute in the radio now, is because I have a great experience, and if I retire now many people couldn't be helped. While I am capable physically to work, I will do it."
"Artists in Cuba have never worked for money, but for we like what we make. My daughter, for example that was raised in the heat of acting, also is part of of this triangle that is acting and the locution."
Of those characters that mark a moment and are remembered for so many years by the public, can you mention some?
"In theater, for instance, "Sayonara" and the comedy "Lives as you want". In Radio I generally prefer the classic plays, among them "Gusty Summits" that we have done in three occasions. Once I did the fascinating Heatclift. I love the negative characters in Operative Guard because those have bigger facets.
If Néstor have to decide on his life again. What a road would he choose?
"I'd really do what I am doing, I'll certainly do. I have never regretted. I have not done it for money, but for the
satisfaction of what I do; it is an incredible work. If I had to retake the reins of my life, I'd be an actor again."
