It is impossible to speak of successes, professionalism and dedication to the radio, without referring to “Nino Moncada “ Dramatic Group, a troupe of actors, directors, playwrights, music consultants, special effects specialists and advisors who convey the audience a rich programming. This programming includes Cuban romances, detective serial Operative Guard, children intended program Pioneers’ World, stories, dramas and many other shows that as Radio Cadena Agramonte’s slogan reads “are in the people’s heart.”
The group was founded on January, 1969 and the first feature programs it produced were the Cuban romance “A New Dawn” and a 12-chapter serial dedicated to Jose Martí’s life. Those actors and actresses who founded it were Deogracia “Nino” Moncada Fontes, Manuel Rodríguez Cruz, José Martínez Estévez, José Luis Cadenas, José “Pepín" Bueno Díaz de Arce, Benito Gil Lacal and Homero de Dios.
The most outstanding of them were Nora Thomas, Mario Crespo, Consuelo Cruz, José Martínez, Martha Queipo, Héctor Vilató, Ángel Olivera, Orosmán Bueno, María Elena Fernández, Yolanda Fonseca, Jorge. A. Morán, Homero de Dios, and others; while the pioneers in narration were Francisco Rivero and Rafael López Álvarez.
José Martínez Estévez speaks of those first times:
“José Alberto González Quiroga arrived here from Santiago de Cuba and he stayed, and shortly after the magnificent late actor of the Cuban radio, cinema and television who was Alejandro Lugo also came to help us, he taught us very much in how to make radio.
"We began the day at 7:00 AM with callisthenics on the roof of the radio station and then we continued with vocalization, using the diaphragm, making improvisations, using the microphone, rehearsing the libretto, everything with such a discipline...all that forged us as professionals.
“Then we begin doing the first novels, “A New Dawn” by Elio Méndez García, was followed by “Radial II”, dedicated to the internationally acclaimed novels. Afterwards, we started with the historical serials, the lives of our heroes, “Immortal Pages”, “Our Continent”, stories, three programs dedicated to the kids’ world, theaters, everything.”
What will be the future of the dramatized programming in Camagüey; taking into account the vast experience and the quality of the human resources nowadays?
“In Camagüey and in Radio Cadena Agramonte in particular there are artistic talents able of taking a good programming ahead, fundamentally the dramatic one.
“If once I thought that with the years, the retirements would cloud its brightness, the youth that has entered the “Nino Moncada” group has convinced me that most of them are able to maintain and still improve the quality of the dramatized programming.
“Even when they lack of experience in many things, for directing for instance is a matter of time, the talent to achieve it does exist."
That is one of “Pepe” Martínez’ satisfactions. Something that for a man that has been 36 years in the fascinating world of drama is a source of pride: the artistic tradition and quality of the Camagueyan radio won't go astray.
Andrés Miguel Pérez, a radioman gives his opinios
Andrés Miguel Pérez Andrés Miguel Pérez is an actor, director and writer and one of those indefatigable men when talking of radio.
"I think that at this moment the Dramatic Group is going through a very, very positive moment, and I hope it goes on so well"
Best works which you have participated in as an actor?
"Answering that is a big commitment, because we have made very difficult things but the achievements have been great. However, the program I’ve liked most is Operative Guard. As a writer I have done Cuban romances, Operative Guard, Adventures; I've written Operative Guard almost from the very beginning of being in Radio Cadena Agramonte. But what I prefer is writing Adventures, I have enjoyed that a lot, especially “The fury of the Volcanos”.
With that adventure you won the Grand Prix at the Festival Nacional de la Radio. What can you tell me about the future?
"There are some actors and actresses that for their experience, for their quality, for their sacrifice, for their professionalism, we call them “stakes”, among them Ángel Olivera whose position is quite deserved; Néstor Rodríguez, Orosmán Bueno, Belkis Sosa, Yolanda Fonseca, among others.
"With the new generation of actors working in the radio station, I believe that in a couple of years these boys and girls will also be “stakes”, I can mention Osmaida Camacho, Aimee Chau, Evisdrián Rojas, Yoandi Aballe son of Belkis Sosa, here we can say “like mother like son”, he has been the revelation of the young actors in the radio station.
"I expect that with this young blood the Dramatic Group of Radio Cadena Agramonte can maintain its level for many years to come."
Andrés Miguel also is a poet of fine and delicate verse as well as experienced narrator. What other plans do you have in your professional life?
"Aside from making radio, I write narrative and poetry and I am planning now to write the first volume of the detective Operative Guard that is one of the main shows of the radio station, with a great audience; we will see if it can also be a best seller."
Dramatic Group "Nino Moncada"Every day the elves wake up in their room located in the second floor of Radio Cadena Agramonte, and fill with magic each atom of air.
In that room is where wonder is made, where the voices convey happiness, sorrow, deception or tenderness to those who are far, but linked to the Radio by those invisible thin waves that cross the sky. The public sigh and love those characters who come to life thanks to the beautiful people of the “Nino Moncada” Dramatic Group.
That power makes them happy. That is their power.
