Havana, Cuba, Jan 4.- Monsignor Carlos Manuel de Cespedes Garcia-Menocal, Episcopal Vicar of Havana’s Archbishopric, who devoted his life to Catholic Church and to his country, died on Friday morning in this capital.
He worked as rector of the “San Carlos y San Ambrosio” Seminar, he was the director of the General Secretariat of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba; the foreign minister of the Archbishopric; a member of several departments of the Latin American Episcopal Council; and a consultant with the Pontifical Council for Culture of the Holy See.
A descendant of the Father of the Homeland, Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, he was a prominent priest, a professor, a writer, an intellectual and a member of the Cuban Academy of Language. He received many acknowledgements, among them the papal award “Chaplain of His Holiness;” the Latin Language and Culture Prize; and the Prize “Usefulness of Virtue.”
A mass will be officiated at 8:00 a.m. on January 4 at the San Agustin Parish Church, where the funeral service was held, and later the burial will take place at Havana’s Colon Cemetery. (ACN)
