Adelante Newspaper of Camagüey Turns 55 Standing on the Side of the Cuban Revolution

Camagüey, Jan 13. - The museum placed in the two-story birth house of patriot Ignacio Agramonte held the ceremony on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of Adelante newspaper, of Camagüey province, which was the first founded in Cuba following the triumph of the Revolution in 1959.

First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in Camagüey Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca and Isabel González Cárdenas, president of the Provincial Assembly of People's Power, presented a special recognition to Daicar Saladrigas González, director of the weekly for this publication has been standing on the side of the Cuban Revolution for 55 years now.

In this context, newsman Rolando Sarmiento Ricart received an award for being the best worker of 2013.

In addition, the Commemorative Medal “50th Anniversary of the Association of Cuban Journalists” was granted to Armando Boudet Gómez, who run the newspaper for many years and to Eduardo Labrada Rodríguez, prominent exponent of investigative journalism in this province.  

The provincial bureaus of the Central Organization of Cuban Trade Unions (CTC) and of the Young Communist League (UJC) took the opportunity to award the staffers of this newspaper.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Tapia Fonseca talked with the attending journalists on the ongoing changes in Cuba’s society and the renovation process underway in the city of Camagüey which prepares to celebrate the 500th anniversary of its foundation on February 2nd.    

The first issue of Adelante newspaper came to light on January 12, 1959, a historical event to which its personnel dedicated a wide array of activities that included photo displays, the setting up of commemorative plaques in the city of Camagüey, volunteer works in farms, softball games, a visit to a sugarcane mill in Esmeralda, some 94 km north-west of Camagüey and a concert.

On January 18th, Adelante newspaper together with the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) have organized a marathon, athletes from several provinces will take part in this race. (Indira Arencibia / Radio Cadena Agramonte).
