Photo Juan Carlos Pérez Nieves CAIDIJE: ITS HISTORY This is the fourth generation of Caidije, the first ‘non-professional’ group of musicians and dancers, whose roots are authentically Haitian. Its name, Caidije, has nothing to do with the neighbouring country, it is the name of the landowner of the small village where a colony of Haitians have settled down near Sola town, in the municipality Sierra de Cubitas. Led by con Ricardo Martínez (Ticet), the group is founded on March 1926 and till 1965 it only participates in activities within its own community. At the moment, incorporated to the Movement of Amateur Artists, Caidije is made up by 25 dancers, 11 of which are women and belongs to the House of Culture of Joaquín de Agüero district in the city of Camagüey. Caidije was the first group in its category that captured the Community Culture Award in 1999. Likewise, it won the Award Juan Marinello and the Distinctions Espejo de Paciencia and Living Memory, among other awards. Its participation in national events is vast and intense, for which Caidije has attended the Fiesta del Fuego en Santiago de Cuba, the Eva Gaspar in Memoriam and the Popular Art Fair in Ciego de Ávila and the International Festival Wemilere, in Havana. But not only Cuba has enjoyed its music and dances, Caidije has taken its art to Belgium, France and Germany; nations where they have received warm praises. |

The folkloric group Caidije, from Camagüey, expression of the cultural elements of the second Haitian immigration in this territory, gets ready to participate on July 2006 in Santiago de Cuba’s Fiesta del Fuego, and in the National Festival of Amateur Artists in Havana.
