Cats, dogs and tick-lipped people coming out from a paintbrush
By Yolanda Ferrera Sosa.
Laughable characters painted in walls amaze the pedestrians that walk down “Benicia Perdomo” Alley in Camagüey city, eastern Cuba. Thick-lipped negritos... cats... dogs... the strong variations in colors and tones coming out from Ileana Sánchez Hing’s paintbrush, confirm that we are before the oeuvre of a creator for whom the environment is completely indispensable.
This is not the artist’s first urban plastic work. In some other times, Sánchez Hing has flooded streets and walls with her art, that’s the case of the Cats’ Park, a public place that fascinates children and adults.
Located at the corner of Lugareño and General Gómez streets, in the city of Camaguey, the place is an evidence of how the art can reach the community in a harmonious manner.
THE ARTIST PROFILE
Ileana Sánchez Hing was born in the city of Camaguey, a city for which she feels a passionate love. She graduated as an Art Instructor in 1983 and one year later she participated at the Third Lounge of Female Creators.
Sánchez Hing, who defines herself as a cat lover, experienced a resounding and unstoppable takeoff in her career in 1990, due to her stunning and attractive style. Then she painted the series Tropicolas, that appeared for the first time in 1991 at the Provincial Lounge of Plastic “Fidelio Ponce of León.”
After a time in which her name did not appear in the lists of galleries exhibitors, Ileana Sánchez Hing made a personal exhibition in 1995 entitled Tres nostalgias no ensayadas, at the Provincial Center of Arts. It was an essentially feminine display, where Ileana used a mixed technique, that is to say: paper collage, magazine cuttings and lithography. In this presentation the artist wanted to make the public think about the women’s daily life at home.
THE NAÏVE ART IN ILEANA’S WORK
Ileana has a tendency to conceive painting as she once did with ceramics, that is a turn back to the naïve - a natural, intuitive or primitive art as it is said. It happened to her after her exhibitions in the Taller SHORT of Nigorra, in Mallorca, from 1994 to 1997. By those days, she had already quitted the rural subject to incorporate the vernacular and familiar characters like her puppy Carmencito, Leopoldo the cat and her parrot.
-“The idea of painting in public places – Ileana says- responds to a desire I have, that is people living inside a multicolour picture…full of joy and of chromatic passion”. For this visual artist Camaguey is necessary as a stage to tell her own stories, and to give her characters a heart and a life.
Ileana Sánchez Hing is a prolific source of images reflecting her home town. The acrylic named La Plaza is an example; in these painting typical sites of Camaguey are present, as well as her cat Leopoldo and the negritos.
Those who come closer to Benicia Perdomo Alley will find Ileana’s cats, dogs and tick-lipped negritos, who seem to invite the walkers to share a colourful world of illusion and fantasy.
