In memory and honor of Amalia Simoni
By Mariela Peña Seguí.
“Woman should be called compensation”, once wrote poet Jose Marti. The idea was inspired by a woman that called his attention for the way she compensated the attitude of her beloved man. Later another phrase became popular and it reads: “Behind every great man there is always a great woman”. However, women and men have marched synchronically through history, with same strength and resolution.
The history of Cuba has proven it with the example of that beautiful and courageous Camagueyan, Amalia Simoni. She was born here and here she wanted to take her eternal rest, after her death on January 23th, 1918.
Once again history has awarded those who live in and love this legendary land: with a woman whose greatness made her humble but necessary, whose love turned her exceptionally beautiful.
If we would have to appraise the beauty in a woman, her bravery, her open-handedness, her loyalty and love, surely she will be irresistible beautiful. Beautiful the woman that abandoned opulence for accompanying the man (Ignacio Agramonte), to march by his side and help him to accomplish his duties.
Beautiful the woman who gave birth the two sons of the Hero.
Beautiful who bore with dignity the harshness, the shortages and even the provocations of the enemy.
Beautiful who bore stoically the sorrow of knowing that the life of her beloved husband came to an end.
Beautiful who devoted herself to Homeland.
Beautiful who saw how her life passed, held not only to remembrance and worship, but also to vindicate the work of Ignacio.
Her beauty finds no match, above all, because two words define her: dignity and love.
Yes, history has awarded us because it has given us Amalia Simoni. It is a duty for all honor her. (Translation: Gualveris Rosales Sánchez).
