On the verge of its 19th anniversary, the Environmental Engineering Centre in Camagüey (some 530 km east of Havana) displays concrete results on the study, protection and monitoring of the environment through research projects and the provision of services aiming at paring down the pollution.
Among those in charge of such job is Environment Sanitation Expert Lázaro Alberto Ferrer Blanco, for whom the implementation of these variants of ecological protection is a daily challenge.
“Our job aims at minimizing the environmental damage in the least costly way, taking into consideration the accessibility to the technologies, the development conditions and the adverse effects caused by the U.S. economic and financial blockade on Cuba.”
Ferrer Blanco added that in the face of real technological difficulties, the human factor turns out to be essential because “in spite of the lack of material resources there is an economically fruitful method consisting of the professional development of the personnel and the maintenance of the technological discipline. If this is fulfilled a 30 percent decrease of the pollution can be achieved.”
Thanks to the work of the specialists of the Environmental Engineering Centre in Camagüey, Cuba’s largest province has shown notable breakthroughs in reducing the damaging wastes in the industrial sector with the implementation of methods towards a sustainable development.
“The clean production, for example, entails saving energy, water and raw materials, and consequently a rise in profits. Camagüey-based Tínima Brewery has been working on this and today it shows very good results with a considerable decline of its pollutants. In addition, the barbed wire manufacturing plant in Nuevitas - about 84 km north-east of the city of Camagüey- has taken some actions to handle the wastes generated there, in the least damaging way”, says M.Sc. Lázaro Alberto Ferrer Blanco.
Founded on February 18, 1992 and belonging to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, the Environmental Engineering Centre in Camagüey compiles results of a great positive impact in the social and economic milieu, such as getting second-generation sugar cane, the model for the comprehensive management of sewage in hubs belonging to the food industry and a service to appraise the air pollution in companies.
The Camagüey–based Environmental Engineering Centre is also working on the peaceful usage of the nuclear techniques in fields such as the public health, the agriculture and the industry. (Translated by Gualveris Rosales Sánchez)
