Camagüey Ballet getting ready for French tour
The Camagüey Ballet, Cuba’s second most important ballet company, will begin a tour around France and Belgium from October 15th through December 20th.
Directed by Regina Balaguer, the troupe’s first performance is scheduled to be held in Brussels and, one day later, it will dance in Paris, where the Palace of Congresses will host two shows. The ensemble will then continue its journey in several French cities, totaling some 86 presentations.
The piece chosen for the tour is The Flames of Paris, by Vasili Vaiononen, in the first version made by a Cuban on the island.
Choreographed by Lili Martínez, the two act and five scene ballet, with an original score by Russian composer Boris de Asafiev and a script by Nikolai Volkov, is inspired by an episode of the French Revolution, the attack on the Tulleries and the victorious march down the City of Light.
The leading roles will be played by young dancers Rosalia de la Torre, Yanny García, Iradiel Rodríguez, Siuchien Ávila, Darilis Camejo and María Varela.
The Flames of Paris was staged for the first time in former Leningrad, currently Saint Petersburg, in 1932. In July 2008, former Bolshoi Artistic Director and current American Ballet Theater choreographer in residence, Alexei Ratmanski, recreated the ballet after Vasili Vainonen, in Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater.
The Camagüey Ballet, established in December, 1967, also toured Ecuador this year.
