Environmental Engineering in Camagüey at the Service of Society

 As a result of 23 years of scientific endeavours and major contributions to the scientific development of this Cuban province, the Research Center for Environmental Engineering (CIAC) in Camagüey, a facility of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA), has become an institution that offers effective solutions to the needs of the community.
Fields such as the food production, the environment, and the energy and water resources are being studied by CIAC specialists, who have achieved satisfactory outcomes in the integrated management models of sewages in Camaguey-based industrial facilities, and in the implementation of irradiation techniques to breed new disease-resistant varieties of sugar cane.
The creation of a radiological data base in this Cuban province and a laboratory network for identifying the main risks affecting the health of human beings are some noteworthy contributions of this centre.
Established in 1989, the CIAC applies and spreads knowledge favouring the handling of science technology and environment, following the carrying out of research projects, scientific and technological services and specialized productions.
In order to meet the needs of the State-run sector, the CIAC renders different services such as the environmental monitoring of the industrial, marine, rain and ground waters, and it keeps an exhaustive radiological vigilance over the imported food and drinks that enter the port of Nuevitas, in northern Camagüey.
With an infrastructure and technological equipment capable to meet the scientific demands of the industrial sector, the CIAC offers its customers advisory services on Safety and Industrial Risks, Systems of Environmental Management and it is responsible for cleaning and keeping pests under control.
The elimination of idle and expired chemicals, and hazardous wastes, and the studies on energy efficiency and clean technologies are other types of scientific services the CIAC provides to companies in this province.
Being an active actor in the system of science and technological innovation, the Research Center for Environmental Engineering in Camagüey moves forward strengthening its services and projects, but also boosts the development of new lines of production related to environment and advanced techniques.
