Camagüey: Delegates to Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power Swear In
Camagüey, Nov 26 - With a remarkable renewing of its leadership, the inauguration of the 13 municipal assemblies of the Peoples' Power took place in Camagüey province on Sunday, concluding so the first stage of the General Elections.
Voters in Camagüey province democratically chose 974 district delegates (councilmembers), who are part now and for two years and a half of the local bodies of People's Power, as Cuba’s Electoral Law establishes.
Through secret and direct voting, the members of these assemblies chose their presidencies, renewed in six municipalities.
Among the island nation’s largest and most populous municipalities, 210 delegates in the city of Camagüey (almost 52 per cent of them ratified by the people’s vote) sworn in.
Those attending the constituent sitting acknowledged the efforts of Iraida Curró who has been delegate since the local bodies of People's Power were created, and now takes up her 15th mandate.
Speaking at the meeting, Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in this province, urged those present and the residents in this province to work more united in the most important projects of our economy, attuned to the transformation the country is undertaking at the moment.
Deputy Faure Chomón Mediavilla, who was a Commander during the struggle for national liberation in the 1950’s, and Luis Ynchausti Rodríguez, head of the Provincial Assembly of People's Power also attended the inauguration of Camagüey’s Municipal Assembly. (Pedro Paneque Ruiz/Radio Cadena Agramonte)
