Washington, Dec 13.- Human DNA presents a second genetic code, opening new horizons in the diagnose and treatment of illnesses, according to a study carried out by Washington University and published by Science magazine.
According to the research, the recently discovered genetic code in the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid or hereditary material in the cells) is written above the code found previously.
The genes use the genetic code to write in two separate languages, one describes how proteins are made while the other tells the cell how to control the genes, say the scientists.
As the second code is written below the other, it kept hidden to science until now, they add.
For over 40 years, the experts assumed the DNA only contained the necessary information for the production of proteins in the human body.
The new results highlight the DNA as a powerful device to store information that nature exploits in unexpected ways, said the author of the study, John Stamatoyannopoulos.
This discovery means that the changes of DNA or mutations which come with age or in response to viruses, they can do more than the scientists previously thought, said the researcher. (Prensa Latina)
