Havana, Jun 25.- Chinese Grand Master Yu Yangyi won the 50th Capablanca Memorial Chess Tournament Elite Group with one round in advance after drawing with Cuban Lazaro Bruzon.
The Asian player, who is only 21, signed peace with Bruzon in just 14 moves of a Grunfeld defense and became unreachable for the rest of the contestants.
In the most exciting match of the day the also local GM Leinier Dominguez beat Ukranian Pavel Eljanov and this result allows him to fight for the second seat as he now appears one point behind Russian Dmitry Andreikin, who drew with his countryman Ian Nepomniatchi, and they will face each other in the final round.
With only one round left, Yangyi tops the standings with 6.5 units followed by Andreikin (5), Eljanov (4.5), Leinier (4), Nepomniatchi and Bruzon (3.5).
The Premier Group, also with one round left, was already won by German GM Vitaly Kunin, who totals 6 points and is accompanied by Cuban Yusnel Bacallao and Polish Jan-Krzysztof Duda, both with 4.5 units, the hosts Carlos Hevia, Yuri Gonzalez, Yuniesky Quesada and Isan Ortiz (4), Polish Kamil Miton (3.5) and the also local Ermes Espinosa (1.5).
Meanwhile, unlike these two groups, the Open Group will be defined in the final round since, so far, there are five players tied on top of the standings with 7 points and there is another group of seven players with 6.5 units. (ACN)
