Havana, Aug 30.- Cuba won seven of the eight bouts in which their athletes were involved in the quarterfinal phase of the World Boxing Championships, based in Hamburg, Germany.
Thus, the Caribbean island already earned seven bronze medals and took an important step in its goal of defending the scepter achieved two years ago in Doha, Qatar.
According to the official website of the contest, all Cuban winners did it by unanimous decision but Erislandy Savon (91 kg), who won by TKO over British Cheavon Clarke.
The other Cuban wins were for Joahnys Argilagos (49), Lazaro Alvarez (60) and Julio Cesar La Cruz (81), all over local boxers, while Yosbany Veitia (52), Andy Cruz (64) and Ronniel Iglesias (69) beat Spanish Gabriel Escobar, Dominican Elvis Rodriguez and American Quinton Rendall, in that order.
Cuba´s only loss in quarterfinals went to the world and Olympic champion Arlen Lopez (75), who surprisingly lost 2-3 to Kazakh Abilkhan Amankul, bronze medalist in the 2017 Asian Championships. (ACN)
