Latin America Attends Cuban Anesthesiology Congress

Havana, Oct 19.- Anesthesiologists from Cuba and the Americas present today their results and experiences at the 11th Congress on this specialty on the island, the president of the organizing committee, Alberto Martínez, informed today.

The doctor highlighted the participation of foreign experts, mainly from the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Argentina, and the United States.

In his opinion, the objective of the Cuban Congress on Anesthesiology, Reanimation, and Pain is to update and discuss the most controversial issues of the different specialities attached to the sector.

Anesthesiology is not a single branch because it treats children, obstetric women, the elderly, people with metabolic disorders such as diabetes, patients with cardiovascular conditions, he explained.

The 11th Cuban Congress on Anesthesiology, which will end next October 21, in addition to the scientific sessions, hosts an exhibition in which companies from several countries show their products.

Martinez said that among the novelties of the event is the exhibition for the first time in the country of an inhalational anesthetic.

About the product, the doctor said that the same was previously patented exclusively by the United States and because of the blockade imposed by that country on the island we were never able to use it.

As its privatization period has passed and it is considered generic, its patent was acquired by a French firm.

The product is of great quality, very safe for children, useful for short-term surgeries because it can wake the patient within a few minutes without contraindications, the doctor said.

According to the scientific program, the experts will discuss topics such as pediatric anesthesia, cardiopulmonary and cerebral resuscitation, trauma and its peculiarities, academic training in anesthesiology, and postanesthetic care, among many others.

The event is dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the first anesthesia performed in Cuba and in Latin America on October 11, 1847, by Dr. Vicente Antonio de Castro at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Havana.
