The surgical activity and a group of indicators of the Camagüey´s hospitals achieved remarkable results during 2017, on the basis of the assembly of high-tech equipment and repair capital of several institutions, to the torque of the investment process implemented in this sector.
About 70% of the interventions were in the form of ambulatory surgery, and the minimum access is concentrated mainly in the fields of Urology, Orthopedics, General Surgery and Neurosurgery.
The province of Camagüey is also a notable reduction in the number of hospital deaths due to chronic non-communicable diseases of the heart and cerebrovascular accidents.
The performance of the personnel working in the hospitals of the territory, is marked by the work intended in the emergency department and the high qualification of specialists in internal medicine, intensive care physicians, neurologists, and nursing care.
In this field also highlights the complex surgery to a child of three years of age, suffering from a congenital deformity of the esophagus.
The operation, never before performed in this region of the Cuban east, was carried out by the Austrian surgeon Alfred Maier, and a multidisciplinary team of pediatric hospital Eduardo Agramonte Piña.
Subjected to various interventions -the last in April 2016- had to be fed through a tube, as such a deformity prevented him from doing so directly, but, with the new proceeding, the patient makes a normal life without limitations.
From the first living donor kidney transplantation, held in the month of December in the Camagüey province, in the Clinical and Surgical Hospital Manuel Ascunce Domenech, was benefited Carlos Pawn Houses, of 51 years of age, resident in this city.
Francisco Javier Pawn, of 23 years, donated the organ to his father, who suffers from a chronic renal failure, a condition that forced him to receive on alternate days hemodialysis sessions, and miscellaneous income in the Nephrology Service of the provincial hospital.
The complex surgical intervention, which lasted about 5 hours without complications of consideration, had as primary surgeon Dr. Abel Ruiz de Villa, and she also participated recognized specialists from Camaguey and Holguin, a pioneer in this type of organ transplant.
With regard to the investments, it should be noted that the Cuban State to the demarcation of 23 million pesos for the repair and maintenance of the centers, which included, in addition to the construction of several health services affected by the hurricane Irma, the implementation of medical equipment in all levels of care.
As a result, were repaired 93 doctors, 10 polyclinics, six homes for the elderly, 13 houses of grandparents, nine clinics, two mental health centers, three rehabilitation rooms, 17 pharmacies, medical genetics center, in addition to some 40 works of great complexity in municipal and provincial hospitals.
The past year was promising also in the social assistance and care for older adults, if one takes into account that Camagüey keeps the sale and leasing of technical means at subsidized prices, with great acceptance and demand in the population.
Among the articles designed in this program stand out beds Fowler, flat beds, mattresses, foam anti-bedsores, bottles and regulators of oxygen, in addition to wheel chairs, as well as wheelchairs, IV pole, vacuum cleaners and prostrate.
With the purpose of these implements are acquired by those who need it most, the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) decided that the family doctor, specialists from the Department of Social Assistance and the elderly, and social workers, are charged with authorizing the sale and lease of the same.
The provisions for distribution and leasing contract sale, entered into force at the beginning of the year with Resolution 149 of the Ministry of Public Health, adopted to benefit to pensioners, disabled persons and social cases.
During the recently concluded calendar, the health system in Camagüey achieved notable progress, fruit of the work of the personnel working in the offices of the family physician, depending on the well-being of the population, considered of primary care in this province.
Even though much remains to be done to consolidate the work at that level, a good part of the premises were renovated with the guarantee of greater permanence of doctors and nurses; where priority is given to the care of patients from strategies of reorganization of the services.
The greatest challenge faced by the program of medical clinics, considered the cornerstone of the first level of attention, is to strengthen the surveillance of chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes mellitus and hypertension, although there are several actions aimed at the prevention and control of these diseases.
For its part, the polyclinics have coverage of inputs and reagents for the ultrasound services, body guard, laboratory, X-ray, electrocardiogram, dentistry and prosthetics; the latter very affected by the lack of raw materials.
In Camagüey, more than three thousand health care professionals and technicians provided medical services in different nations, as part of the vocation of solidarity that drives Cuba in more than 100 countries.
Managers of the department of Medical Cooperation in this demarcation, informed the provincial radio that these physicians work in 49 nations, mostly in Venezuela, Bolivia, Angola and Haiti, linked to programs such as the Comprehensive Health Care, Mission Barrio Adentro and the Operation Miracle.
As a continuity of a program of cooperation between China and Cuba, to increase the production of medicines from blood donations, Camagüey was the fourth province in the country that managed to install plasmapheresis machines of high technology.
The Blood Bank of the territory, strut in the country in the production of blood products, with high standards of quality, already has the modern equipment DIGIPLA Model 80, manufactured by the Chinese company Sichuan Nigale Biomedical Company.
These new devices were installed in blood banks in Havana, Pinar del Rio, Cienfuegos, Cienfuegos and Camagüey, with the purpose of modernizing the technology company dedicated to the extraction of plasma and increase the volume of donations.
It should be noted that at the end of the year, the Camagüey province record the lowest infant mortality rate in its history and the birth of the last two periods, level only registered in countries of high development and is expected to maintain with the sustained work of the Maternal and Child Care Program (PAMI).
Transcends its time, such as a favorable experience for this program, the introduction of new technologies such as Doppler ultrasound in the prenatal care, which can predict maternal complications such as preeclampsia and measure indicators of fetal well-being, available in almost all the health areas of the territory.
The ongoing challenge of the Camagüey´s Health system corresponds to the prevention and control of diseases, in order to enhance the quality of life of those residing in the fourth province of Cuba with the greatest number of inhabitants.
