HAVANA, Sep 13. - Cuba lost in its debut today to Poland in the continuation of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men´s World Championship, which takes place in several cities of Bulgaria and Italy.
Based in the Bulgarian city of Varna and in match for Group D, Cubans lost 1-3 (18-15 and 19-25, 25-21 and 14-25) to the current reigning champion.
According to the FIVB website, the top scorer of the match was the Polish Artur Szalpuk, who scored 20 points and was supported by Bartosz Kurek (17) and Michal Kubiak (14), while Javier Concepción (12), Marlon Yang (11) and Miguel David Gutiérrez and Roamy Alonso (10 each) stood out for the losing side.
The Caribbean squad rests today and their next opponent this Friday will be Finland, which lost to Bulgaria 3-0 on its debut.
Other results of this group are the following : Iran beat Puerto Rico 3-0, while in Pool A (Florence, Italy), Slovenia defeated the Dominican Republic (3-1) and Belgium did the same to Argentina (3-1); in Group B (Ruse, Bulgaria), France, Canada and Brazil won all 3-0 over China, Holland and Egypt, in that order, and in Pool C (Bari, Italy), Cameroon and Russia beat both 3-0 Tunisia and Australia respectively, while United defeated Serbia 3-2.
The top four teams from each group will advance to a second round featuring four pools of four teams. (ACN)
