Lawyers demand impartial and fair trial for Lula in Brazil

Brasilia, Nov 2. -Lawyers for the defense of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ratified on Friday their decision to take measures at the national and international levels to guarantee the former Brazilian president's right to a fair, impartial and independent trial.

The decision was made after Judge Sergio Moro, who sentenced Lula to prison, accepted the invitation from President-elect Jair Bolsonaro to be future Minister of Justice.

According to the defense attorneys, Moro's appointment to the post reinforces the thesis that the former president was subjected to persecution to prevent his candidacy for the presidential elections and to favor Bolsonaro.

The founder of the Workers' Party (PT) has been held in prison since April, after being sentenced without evidence to serve 12 years and one month for alleged corruption.

Lawyer Cristian Zanin Martins noted that the former head of State (2003-2010) was a victim of law fare, which consists of abusing or misusing law and legal procedures for the purpose of political persecution.

At the time of his arrest, and even in prison, Lula headed the polls on the presidential elections held in October 2018.

PT President Gleisi Hoffmann described Sergio Moro's appointment as the next Minister of Justice as the swindle against the century.

“Moro took Lula out of the game to choose his candidate, who now rewards him,” Hoffmann denounced on his Twitter account, when referring to Bolsonaro's decision to favor the federal judge. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
