Impact of in vitro fertilization grows in Camagüey’s livestock

Camagüey, Nov 3. -The recent birth of six calves distinguishes the work of the Embryo Transfer Laboratory Desembarco del Granma of the genetic company Rescate Sanguily, in Camaguey’s municipality of Jimaguayú, a demonstration of the effort to support the multiplication of milk and meat line animals, using science and technology.

From the genetic background existing in the aforementioned entity, a specimen of the Scottish race Aberdeen Agnus, four Chacuba, from the crossbreeding of the species Charolaise and Cebú, and one Siboney have been achieved by this procedure and fertilization in vitro during 2018.

The veterinary doctor Reinaldo Pérez Lastre, specialist of the center, specified that this enterprise has a bank of frozen embryos of high hereditary quality, with the aim of contributing to the substitution of imports.

He explained that the protocol established to make the donor cow have a super ovulation requires precision and by an overdose of hormones, ovarian stimulation is performed. Then the rutting is induced to the cow to be able to inseminate it and obtain the embryos that will be implanted in the receptor after the seven days.

Elso Cordero Cordero, director of technology and development in "Desembarco del Granma", said that the appropriate care and management of the birth are essential for the survival and health of the calf and includes biosafety, a suitable acuartonamiento(the  squared segmentation of the meadow), to examine the staple of the navel, to check the cleanliness, formulation of rations, food and adequate veterinary care.

Considered as one of the most efficient technologies for the genetic improvement of livestock due to its high effectiveness and easy use, the transfer of embryos is part of the programs that are developed in the province of Camagüey to increase the potential livestock, both in number and in hereditary quality.

Its application in Cuba dates from the decade of the 80’s of the last century, on the initiative of the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.

It was in 1989 that Desembarco del Granma center, of national reference opened its doors, and that after several years without functioning because of the special period and the inability to import due to its high prices in the market, hormones and other products, it was revived in 2015.
