Havana, Cuba, Mar 19.- Doctor Helen Herrman (Australia), President of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA), said she was honored and happy for having received the Honorary Membership from the Cuban Society of Psychiatry (SCP).
I have been fortunate to see how psychiatry in Cuba has a very progressive work in this sense and I consider that for the WPA and for me personally this recognition is very important and satisfactory, she told Cuban News Agency.
For the first time in Cuba, Herrman participates in the IX National Congress of Psychiatry, inaugurated on Wednesday in the Conventions Center of Havana with more than 300 delegates, a hundred of them coming from Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, United States and Australia.
She expressed her admiration for the work of Cuba in this field and especially in the community, which she saw on a tour of community health centers and hospitals in the capital.
Cuban specialists are very well trained and in addition in hospital institutions respect the dignity of people, privacy, and I appreciated that patients feel welcome in the places I have visited, she remarked.
Integrating psychiatry with health and not separating it, developing community mental health and ensuring that the training of professionals meets the required international standards and respects human rights are among the WPA's projections, she said. (ACN)
