Beijing, Feb 7 - China woke up on Friday shocked over the death of the doctor who revealed to the public the epidemic of coronavirus 2019-nCoV, which already killed about 637 persons and infected 31,211.
Wuhan Central Hospital, epicenter of the outbreak, confirmed that Li Wenliang, a 33-year-old ophthalmologist based in Wuhan, who discovered the disease, died of complications from this respiratory condition, which he contracted in early January.
After his heart stopped beating on Thursday night, several intensive care therapies were applied to him, but all were unsuccessful.
Millions of Internet users are invading social media with comments expressing their regret over the death of the young doctor and even the World Health Organization expressed condolences.
Li warned on December 30 in a group of the popular WeChat social media that seven patients were tested positive for SARS, an acute respiratory syndrome that killed hundreds of people 17 years ago in Asia and other continents.
Four days later, Dr. Li was summoned to the police, along with seven other individuals, for spreading false news on the internet.
But on January 10, he began to show symptoms of the coronavirus and on February 1, he wrote on Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter, he was finally confirmed as a case of the coronavirus, which keeps the country and the world in maximum emergency because it is a danger for the public health. (PL)
