WHO reports about five million Covid-19 cases

Geneva, May 21.- The Covid-19 pandemic in the world accumulates almost five million confirmed cases, according to updated figures from the World Health Organization (WHO), although other counts indicate that this threshold has already been exceeded.

According to the official report of the UN body, at the international level there are 4,900,000 infections, while the Worldometers website reports more than 5,100,000, which shows the unstoppable spread of the SARS CoV-2 coronavirus.

The United States remains the nation most affected with 1,500,000 cases and almost 100,000 deaths, despite which in the country the measures of lack of confinement are advancing with the approval of the administration of President Donald Trump.

On the continent of America, the epicenter of the pandemic for a few days with more than two million patients, eyes are also focused on Brazil given the increase in cases and the absence of a solid official plan aimed at halting the spread of the virus.

With more than 270,000 infections and almost 18,000 deaths, the South American giant ranks as the third most affected country in the entire world.

On the other hand, that international organization and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) signed this Thursday a new agreement to expand their cooperation and support millions of people who are displaced in the midst of the pandemic.

As part of the actions to support the most vulnerable groups, the parties agreed to join forces to promote and consolidate public health services for those in this situation. (Text and Photo: PL)
