Cuba prioritizes food production before Covid-19

Havana, May 25 .- Cuban President Miguel Díaz- Canel , affirmed this Sunday that food production in the national territory is a priority, as is the decrease in imports.

The Head of State checked the progress of this essential sector for national development and recalled that it is conceived as a strategic area in the guidelines of the economic and social policy of the Communist Party of Cuba.

The president indicated to eradicate the importing mentality if it is known that there are financing problems.

He also urged to encourage internal production and those who are able to carry it out and directed to rescue productions that were previously made, such as natural juices and derivatives of sugar cane.

In this regard, the Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero, commented that there is a group of productions that can be implemented at the municipal, local or family level.

He also called for promoting certain exports to facilitate the introduction of foreign exchange destined for the sector's own development.

The Minister of the Food Industry explained that work is being done to revive the technology necessary to encourage, among other productions, canned food, sausages, yogurt, oil and wheat flour.

The scarce manufacture of equipment and spare parts was discussed at the meeting as a problem that prevents the production of groceries, as well as the lack of containers and packaging.

Given the economic situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, measures are taken in Cuba to deal with the crisis, including actions to guarantee food.

Currently, Cuba imports about two billion tons of products destined for basic consumption, an action that becomes complex in the face of the financial situation caused by Covid-19 and the US blockade. (Text and Photo: PL)
