Havana, May 25 .- Mothers with Covid-19 must strictly comply with sanitary measures during breastfeeding, recommended the director of Epidemiology of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health, Francisco Durán.
Physical contact implies a risk of contagion of the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus, the cause of this disease, explained the doctor at the daily press conference on the subject.
As actions to follow, he suggested that the parents wash their hands well, disinfect their breasts for lactation, and use masks.
It is not breast milk that is risky, but physical contact, said Durán, who commented that the WHO does not suggest the transmission of Covid-19 from a sick mother to her son during breastfeeding.
He also mentioned a study by a university in Germany on two women who developed symptoms of illness after sharing a hospital room, and both of them and their children tested positive.
SARS-Cov-2 was present in one patient's milk and not in the other, but those who conducted the study stated that they lack evidence that breastfeeding is a transmission route, he added. (Text and Photo: PL)
