Havana, May 27 .- Cuban sugar producers intensify their efforts to provide more sucrose in the 2019/20 harvest, at a time when spring rains hamper the harvest and milling of sugarcane.
Of the 44 sugar factories enrolled in this season, at the end of the last week 20 of them remained active in the country, according to the information and analysis director of Azcuba, Dionis Pérez.
He indicated that two provinces, Sancti Spiritus and Cienfuegos, have fulfilled their technical economic production plan, as well as a group of factories from other territories.
However, in this harvest, with less factories enrolled than in the previous one, higher industrial performance is achieved (98% of the plan), with higher quality of sugar, Pérez said.
Regarding derivatives, deliveries of Honey B as animal food destined for agriculture, and more than 400 thousand tons of nutrients from crop residues and by-products of the agro-industry are fulfilled.
Good results are also achieved in the manufacture of other items such as alcohol, gel disinfectant against Covid- 19, and those intended for drugs, cosmetics, beverages and other industries.
Parallel to the harvest, the preparatory work for further campaigns, such as the clearing of land, planting of sugarcane, fertilization and the comprehensive cleaning of this crop, are advancing.
This Tuesday the Association of Sugar Technicians of Cuba (ATAC) summoned its more than 10,000 affiliates to participate with their presence and knowledge in the tasks to finish the harvest.
According to Azcuba, the harvest ends amid difficulties due to the upsurge in the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, which hindered the timely acquisition of equipment, parts, fuel and other inputs, which generated delays in the level of production that could not be eliminated.
