International Federation of Weights delays qualifying events for Tokyo

Havana, Jul 24.- At the request of the organizing committees, the International Federation of Weights (IWF) delayed for November-December a group of events that offer ranking points towards the Tokyo Olympics.

On our continent, a couple of Colombia-based leaders have been delayed, offering more preparation possibilities for athletes and more time to mitigate the effects of Covid-19 on the nations involved.

We are talking about the South American, Ibero-American and Open Weight Championship based in Cali, now from 12 to 19 of the last month of the year.

That fight, silver category, is key for Cuba in its qualifying aspirations towards Tokyo, hence the idea is to carry a minimum of two weightlifters.

The other fight of interest for the Island is the Pan American Youth Weight Championship scheduled in Manizales at the end of November, exactly from 21 to 26.

This fair, also in the silver category, offers points for the Olympic lists and is also a qualifier for the I Pan American Youth Games, scheduled in Cali next year.

In this regard, Jorge Luis Barcelán mentioned the importance of attending with complete or almost complete teams, as the classification system recommends this.

Of course, health and financial situations will advise how to deal with the event.

The IWF also reported the delay of the African Youth and Cadet Championship and the cancellation of the world university competition.

JIT learned, at the same time, that the IWF plans to organize in 2021 the absolute world cup, despite coinciding with the Olympic event. (Text and photo: Jit)
