Washington, Aug 10 - The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Association of Children's Hospitals reported today that in the United States in just two weeks, 97 thousand minors tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19.
The new report discloses the result of the last fortnight of July, in which there was a 40% increase in child cases.
According to the source, the age range for children differs from state to state, and some define minors up to 14 years old and one state, Alabama, contemplates them up to 24.
Although some American leaders assure that the virus does not represent a great risk for children, a recent study suggests that they can transmit the virus as much as adults.
Other research indicates that infants under the age of five have a higher viral load than adults, raising even more questions about their role in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2.
At least 86 children have died in the United States since May, according to the report, and last week, a seven-year-old child with no pre-existing conditions became the youngest coronavirus victim in the state of Georgia. (Text and photo: PL)
