Havana, Sep 25.- The Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) of Cuba received the Award for Excellence in Public Health granted by the World Federation of Associations of this branch of medicine.
In a message on its official Facebook account, the institution disclosed the official letter sent by said non-governmental entity, accredited in official relations with the World Health Organization.
“Dear colleagues and friends, with the feeling that it is a fair recognition of the work that the workers of this prestigious institution do in the field of public health and medicine, as do thousands of brothers in the different countries of our region, we share the satisfaction of the award received”, refers the IPK text.
It was in the molecular biology laboratories of the IPK where the first tests were carried out to detect the presence of Covid-19 in Cuba.
Then these activities of real-time PCR analysis were extended to other similar entities in the Provincial Centers of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology of Havana, the central province of Villa Clara and the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba.
Later, the laboratories of the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, the Civil Defense, Medical Genetics and Molecular Immunology laboratories, as well as the Manuel Fajardo, Fructuoso Rodríguez and Luis Díaz Soto hospitals (Naval).
The IPK also trained more than 7,000 professionals in virology, specific signs and symptoms of this high-risk and rapidly spreading disease.
As the head of the Virology Department of that institution, Sonia Resik, recently explained to the Granma newspaper, the laboratories work with total gear to detect new positive cases for Covid-19 and evaluate the replication kinetics of the virus in those confirmed and those persistent with infection.
The specialist explained that they are also in charge of certifying the supplies, reagents and equipment used in the activity, of national or foreign origin.
Likewise, the strict biosafety regulations to be met within the institutions are drawn up, the personnel working in these facilities are trained and their compliance is supervised, he said. (PL) (Photo: File)
