Camagüey, Oct 28.- Grand Master (GM) Carlos Daniel Albornoz emerged as the best athlete of October in the province of Camagüey, for his meritorious performance in the Pan-American University Chess Championship, held at the end of last September and the beginning of the current month.
In that appointment called virtually by the International Federation of University Sports of America, the almost 20-year-old player was proclaimed individual monarch, when he triumphed in the final against the Peruvian Cristian David Vásquez.
The current national holder also headed the Cuban team that reached the bronze medal in the team event of the aforementioned tournament, played on the digital platform lichess.org, and where the FIDE Master from Camaguey Jorge Roberto Elías also took part.
With 11 accumulated points, and five victories, an even game and only one setback, the group from Cuba lagged behind Mexico and Peru, deserving of the gold and silver medals, respectively.
Currently, Albornoz is a member of the cast representing Cuba in the Online World University Championship of Mind Sports, to be held until next Friday with the participation of 32 countries.
