Bruno Rodríguez highlights vaccine production in Cuba despite blockade

Havana, Jan 22.- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez today praised the work of his country's scientists, who despite the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States are developing vaccines against Covid-19.

In his Twitter account, the Foreign Minister highlighted the creation of capacities to produce 100 million doses of one of the drugs in clinical trial, Soberana 02, which will guarantee the immunization of the population of the Caribbean nation and support the fight against the pandemic in the world.

He added that Cuban biotechnology overcomes the continuous suffocation of the US siege in order to guarantee health and save lives.

This week the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV), leader of the Sovereign 02 candidate project, announced at a press conference that the country was preparing to manufacture this drug in sufficient quantities to meet its needs and contribute to other interested nations.

The director general of the IFV, Vicente Vérez, then affirmed that the application on the island would be totally free and it is intended to immunize the entire population this year.

He emphasized that Cuba's strategy for the commercialization of the vaccine is a combination of humanity and impact on world health, because the financial objective is not the number one reason, but to create more health.

Cuba develops four vaccine candidates against Covid-19, which are going through different phases of clinical trials with encouraging results, according to specialists.

This is done in the midst of a resurgence of the US blockade, which according to the report prepared by the Cuban government on its effects, in the period from April 2019 to March 2020 caused damages to the biopharmaceutical industry in the order of 161 millions of dollars. (Text and photo: PL)
