Havana, Cuba, May 3.- The Cuban boxers had an excellent performance during the beginning of the Pre Pan-American Boxing Tournament, in Quito, Ecuador.
Cuban light flyweight Yosvani Veitia won 20-4 over US Michael Benedosso, and Cuban welterweight Carlos Bantteur defeated Jackson Barchmert, from Cayman Islands by TKO (Doctor’s stoppage).
As said by Coach Julian Gonzalez, both Cuban boxers only need to win during the semifinals because they already assured bronze medals; thus they would guarantee their ticket to Guadalajara, Mexico.
Veitia will clash with Venezuelan Eiver Hernandez, and Banteur will do it with Brazilian Myke Carvalho, who defeated him last year in the Pan-American tournament.
This qualifier, held at the General Rumiñahui Gym, is the second one after the Cumana tournament, held last month in Venezuela; and it will guarantee three tickets per category (gold and silver medalists, and bronze medalist defeated by the winner).
Cuba assured its participation in eight divisions and now is trying to complete the full squad for the Mexican tournament. (acn).
