Havana, Cuba, May 21.- With just a week and a half to go before the start of what is expected to be an above-normal hurricane season, Cuba is carrying out its annual Meteoro disaster response drills this weekend, the media reported Saturday.
The objective is to improve the response system for extreme contingencies caused by hurricanes, prolonged drought, and other phenomena, Granma newspaper reported.
According to sources from the Civil Defense National Staff press department, the drills include leadership and command bodies at all levels of provincial and municipal civil defense councils and defense zones.
Other participants include units and institutions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and Interior Ministry as well as state authorities and agencies, to assess disaster reduction plans and other indicators.
On Sunday, the focus will be on practical activities to improve preparedness and risk awareness among the people, especially in high-risk areas, the article said. (Prensa Latina).
