Medical Attention to Pregnant Women and Infants, a Priority in Cuba

Camagüey , Aug 4.- Monitoring the health conditions of those women with a high risk pregnancy and a special attention to the low weightbirth babies, are two top priorities of the medical staff at Camagüey-based Ana Betancourt de Mora Mother and Child Hospital.
The service of neonatology has the mission of providing a special attention to the little ones, in order to avoid neurological complications and other problems, caused by low birthweight, told press Dr. Diana Fernández.

Working on a Intensive Care Unit in any hospital means a tremendous challenge for a nurse, however doing this job here is the greatest commitment of all, is what thinks nurse Yamilé Rivero Rodríguez, who has been a Specialist in Neonatology since 1996.

Many mothers in Camagüey remain several weeks in this hospital after the delivery, as far as no threat puts in danger the lives of their children.

Although there are still many dissatisfactions in the professional acting of doctors, nurses and other personnel, the province of Camagüey exhibits the enviable figure of only three deaths per 1000 live births so far this year, one of the lowest figure reported by Ana Betancourt de Mora Mother and Child Hospital over the last years.
