Havana, Cuba, Oct 21.- Thanks to a perfect performance by the four Cuban Greco-Roman wrestlers that competed on Thursday, the Caribbean nation climbed to the fourth spot of the medal standings of the 16th Pan American Games that are under way in the Mexican city of Guadalajara.
Gustavo Balart (55 kg), Pedro Isaac (66 kg), Pablo Shorey (84 kg) and Mijain Lopez (120 kg) beat all their rivals and walked away with the four crowns up for grabs in the men’s Greco-Roman wrestling tournament on Thursday in Guadalajara.
Other outstanding performances by Cuban representatives on Thursday were those of badminton player Osleni Guerrero, who walked away with the silver medal in the men’s individual event —the first Pan American medal ever for Cuba in this sport—; and swimmer Hanser Garcia, who won the bronze medal in the men’s 50-meter freestyle event with a new national record for Cuba.
In another good result, the young Cuban women’s volleyball team walked away with the silver after their loss in five sets in the finale against Olympic champions and the world’s number one team Brazil.
Also on Thursday, in cycling, Marlies Mejias took a bronze in the women’s Omnium event.
After these results, Cuba places fourth with ten crowns, nine silver and eight bronze medals. The United States is ahead with 34 titles, 33 silver and 31 bronze. Brazil (14-12-16) and Canada (12-10-17) are in the second and third spots, respectively. (acn).
