Dayron Robles Leads Cuban Squad to IAAF World Indoor Championships

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 29.- Cuban sprint hurdler Dayron Robles leads the Cuban 11-athlete squad that will compete at the upcoming World Indoor Championships of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) scheduled for March 9-11 in Istanbul, Turkey.

The current Olympic champion and world record holder in the men’s 110-meter hurdles will try to defend the title he won in the men’s 60-meter hurdles during the previous World Indoor Championships held in
Doha, Qatar.

Although Robles only has a season best of 7.50 seconds —far from his personal best of 7.33—, he is still regarded as one of the favorites, along with Chinese Liu Xiang and American David Oliver, among others.

According to sources of the Cuban Athletics Commission, the Caribbean nation’s team for Istanbul is completed by triple jumpers Yargelis Savigne, Mabel Gay, Alexis Copello and David Giralt; sprint hurdler Orlando Ortega; pole vault specialists Lazaro Borges and Yarisley Silva; heptathlete Yordanis García; and shot putters Misleydis Gonzalez and Carlos Veliz.
