Tokyo, Jan 23.- The eruption of the Kusatsu-Shirane volcano in Gunma Prefecture in this country, killed a Self-Defense Force member and wounded 11 other people.
The explosion of the volcano, near a ski resort in eastern Japan, caused a rain of stones and ash, Kyodo news agency said.
Local authorities stated that the landslide could originate from earthquakes related to the eruption.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reports that the Kusatsu-Shirane volcano, which is about 2,171 meters above sea level, had a previous eruption in 1983.
The data collected by the Tokyo Institute of Technology show the presence of volcanic rocks one kilometer from the crater, near the Kagamiike pond, at the Moto-Shirane peak. (Prensa Latina)
