Havana, Oct 12.- Starting today, 90 athletes from 11 sports will gather in facilities in eight provinces, with the aim of continuing the preparation after isolation in their homes and territories due to the difficult situation imposed on the world by the Covid-19, and that affects Cuba since March 11.
With the incorporation of training under the supervision of technical groups, they will continue to fine-tune the sight with a view to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic.
Since September 1, athletics in Camagüey, boxing (Camagüey) and Greco-Roman wrestling (Camagüey) and male and female free wrestling (Sancti Spíritus) have not stopped their actions, so the process takes another important step towards the Olympics.
Now the chosen disciplines, with all guaranteed health protocols, are judo, with Olympic and Paralympic athletes, which will meet training bases in Santiago de Cuba (male) and Cienfuegos (female), as well as weightlifting and swimming, both in Granma.
From what was reported, recently, in the meeting with the direction of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder) with the press, only the dive is pending, since the members of the preselection will continue their preparation in their provinces.
So far, Cuba has 41 -Olympic- and four -paralympic- athletes classified for Tokyo, and with 232 shortlisted, so the number of qualified must increase in the coming months. (Text and photo: ACN)
