Camagüey, Nov 27.- This Friday the Rafael Fortún Chacón Sports Palace in the city of Camagüey will host the Match of Cuban Boxing Challengers, with the participation of the two main national exponents in each of the eight weight categories.
In the meeting, which will be broadcast on a delayed basis by Cuban television, and which will not be attended by the public, the preparation of the Antillean boxers will be measured for the pre-Olympic tournament in America, rescheduled for May 2021 because of the world epidemiological situation caused by Covid-19.
Alberto Puig de la Barca, president of the Cuban Boxing Federation, evaluated the conditions of the ring that was set up in the Palacio de los Deportes in Camaguey, while praising the province of Agramontina for the organization of the event.
In exchange with the press, the manager referred to the difficult competitive route before the Olympic qualifying, in a discipline that is committed to providing medals to the largest of the Antilles in the event under the five rings. Among those events, he mentioned in December the cap "all against all" at the National Boxing School; in February, a competition in Uzbekistan, and in April, a cap in Mexico and the National Series, which will also be based in Camagüey.
Likewise, he stressed that the Challenge Match event is the first competition of the flagship of Cuban sport after the most complex stage of Covid-19, and that since 2011 there has not been a meeting of this type in the country. Hence, he assured, all the expectations placed on the fighting, to verify the results of the training sessions in recent months.
Julio César La Cruz, at 91 kilograms (kg), four-time world champion and Olympic holder, will go up to the ring for the locals; the young Dainier Peró, Pan-American monarch at over 91 kg, as well as Damián Arce at 52 kg, Kevin Brown at 69 kg, Yoenli Hernández and Yeiner Areu at 75 kg, and Raicel Poll at 81 kg.
